Your residence permit is expiring and you will not continue to live in the Netherlands. You wish to stay in the Netherlands for an additional maximum of 90 days after the end of your permit. Read what to do.

Check whether you need a visa

After your residence permit has expired, you can possibly stay in the Netherlands for an additional maximum of 90 days. Sometimes you need a Schengen visa for this. First go to Nederlandwereldwijd.nl and check whether or not you need a visa. Then read below what you have to do.

You do not need a Schengen visa

Do you meet all the requirements for a short stay? After your residence permit has expired, you can stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days during your visa-exempt term. You do not have to leave the Netherlands or the Schengen area first.

Keep your expired residence document with you until you leave the Netherlands or the Schengen area. This way, you can show that you have had lawful residence in the Netherlands.

You need a Schengen visa

You first have to apply for a Schengen visa in order to be able stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days after your residence permit has expired. You cannot apply for this visa in the Netherlands. You will therefore first have to leave the Netherlands for this. You have been given a return decision

Has your residence permit been withdrawn and has a return decision been imposed? Then you have to leave the Netherlands. You are no longer allowed to stay in the Netherlands. Not even for a short stay or during your visa-exempt term. Read more about a return decision.
