What is a residence permit for long-term EU residents?
This is a permanent European Union (EU) residence permit. With this residence permit it will be easier for you to move to another EU country. Not all EU countries have a residence permit for long-term EU residents. Check if you have a residence permit for a long-term EU resident in another EU country.
Advantages as a long-term EU resident
Holders of a residence permit for long-term EU residents in another EU country can more easily apply for a Dutch residence permit. You have the following advantages:
- You do not need a provisional residence permit (MVV).
- You do not need to take a TB test.
- You pay less for the application of some residence permits. See the costs of an application.
- You can apply for a residence permit for economically inactive long-term EU residents.
- Have you received the residence permit in the Netherlands? Then you are allowed to work in the Netherlands without a work permit (in Dutch: tewerkstellingsvergunning or TWV) earlier. You do not need a work permit for a period of 5 years, but only for 12 months. The work permit is a separate permit that must be applied for by the employer.
Apply for a Dutch residence permit
You do not need a provisional residence permit (MVV) to travel to the Netherlands. To live in the Netherlands you do need a Dutch residence permit. You apply for a temporary residence permit. Residence permits always have a residence purpose. The purpose of residence is the reason why you came to the Netherlands. For example to work, study or live with your partner.
Each residence purpose has different requirements. Visit the page of each residence permit to find out what the requirements are:
